Basic rules of blackjack to help you win

It is important to learn the basics of blackjack before you pick up the traits of winning at the game. The good news is that it is not a herculean task to master the basics of this game since it is based on intuition to a certain extent. Just reading through the rules a couple of times and making an effort to retain them in your mind will do fine. It is also useful toget familiar with some blackjack tips.

As a new player, you are bound to come across some terms in the blackjack rules section that you may not be familiar with. In such cases, you can refer to the 'blackjack odds' or glossary section to know more about a particular term.

Blackjack rules

It is important to dissect the set of 52 cards if you want to learn the game of blackjack. There is cutoff limit for the points so the player refrains from collecting cards limitlessly. 21 is the maximum number of points in blackjack a person can draw in a given hand. If you go beyond number, there are chances of you losing to the dealer or going 'bust'.

The second rule you will need to understand is that unlike in the game of poker, in blackjack you are not playing against the other players, but the dealer. Hence, your focus should only on the cards in your hands and in the dealer's hand. You win if you succeed in beating the dealer.

Beating the dealer is dependent on how you play the game. You will be able to strategize the game well only if you know the simple rules of the game. At the start of the game, every player at the table places a bet. Once the bets are placed, the dealer deals the two cards to himself and to all others seated at the table.

The next step is to calculate the value of the cards in your hand. The face cards have a value of 10 each while the value of the other cards is their face value. Based on this, you can compute the value of the cards you hold. If a player has a card of value 10 and an ace, the value totals to 21 and is called a natural. There is a special payout awarded to such hands.

If you don't have a 'natural', then, you have to build the value of 21 based on the 'actions' you take. You can either 'stand' (not take another card) or 'hit' (pull the card from the deck).

Though you have options to 'double down' or 'split' they are not as frequently used as the actions mentioned above.

Once you have performed one of the actions, your turn is over. The game moves to the next player. At the end of the game, all players at the table including the dealer must reveal their cards. The one who has the value greater than that of the dealer wins the game. This game is unlike slots, for instance, and other casino game so you need to check the rules carefully.
